Essay 2 - Gracie
Martin Luther was clearly speaking in a civil manner, for example “I would like to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms”. Martin was clearly concerned about the complaint he got so, he decided to a thoughtful and emotional letter to return to Fellow Clergymen. He put much compassion into this letter, which indeed shows good character. Martin Luther King Jr. structured his letter in a very civil format, he also used much emotion in order to make his writing more heartfelt and relatable therefore more people would consider joining his cause.
To begin with, Martin shows so much respect and patience in this letter after being criticized for his actions, when readers then see this, it shows very good character. For example “I would like to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms”. Martin explains that he is being patient and reasonable in the response to the criticism that Fellow Clergymen gave him, these are both very important qualities. In addition to that “I feel that you are men of genuine goodwill and your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I would like to answer your statement what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms” shows much patience. The beginning of the quote explains that he looked over and genuinely thought about what he said before writing a letter back to explain in more detail.
Looking at different angle, when the readers listen to the way Martin speaks to others then begin to realize maybe they should join his cause. “There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than any city in this nation.” Martin is an honest man therefore includes factual information to back up his points in the letter, as harsh and brutal as they can be. “Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country. Its unjust treatment of Negroes in the courts is a notorious (well-known) reality.” Once readers finished reading these facts about how poorly police treated they realized that Martin had some strong facts for his actions, and began to wonder if they were on the wrong side.
Like I have said before Martin made people recognize his good character after reading. Using quotes from his letter and providing them into my text proves the statements I have made. Martin shows so much respect, patience, and honesty; which all show great character.
