In a world full of unlawful discrimination, one man stands up to fight an impossible battle. In this essay I will talk about how Martin Luther King Jr stood up to discrimination by writing a speech to empower others like him. Hope, courage, and knowledge are three tones that empower others in Martin Luther King Jr’s letter.
Martin Luther King Jr’s letter is a symbol of hope for others. He even says in his speech, “We cannot walk alone.” He is saying that all of his fellow oppressed need to band together and that they cannot walk alone, without each other. The title of the speech itself evokes power, “I have a Dream.” Another line of his is, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.” This shows the Kings dream that all humans will be treated as equals. Martins speech inspires hope in others like him.
Martin Luther King Jr’s letter is spoken with courage like David against a power enemy, a Goliath if you will. In the line, “One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” This line is powerfully against how the white man harmed his people and how he is identifying that. He also uses courage in saying, “Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." This stands up to how others have viewed him and his brethren up until now. “And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.” This is a slam to how the oppressed are to stand up to wrongful actions. Martin Luther King Jr was a courageous man.
Martin's letter was, to conclude, full of knowledge. “Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.” This line uses a powerful metaphor to show how his kinds shall rise from their former discrimination. “This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Based on this line, Martin had a strong knowledge of our nations Declaration of Independence. “With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.” With this line is another powerful metaphor explaining how his speech and his hope show if even a pebble of hope for his kind.
